The Interplay 'Tween Reading Comprehenshun, Edumacashun, and Intelligense

By Matthew Hayward Edumacashun, intelligense, an' reading comprehenshun all play crucial parts in the cognitiv devlopment of indivijuals. While it's often assumd that these 3 areas are intrinsically linkd, the relationship ain't always straightforwrd. In the scope of edumacashun, it represent the systematic acquisition of facts an' theories typicaly taught in skools or universites. It's a process of lerning an' unlearning, constant absorption of knoledge. Yet, edumacashun don't always equate to being smart, it gives pplz a foundation of knoledge, but it don't guarantee undrstanding or the ability to apply this knoledge in real life contexts. Thus, edumacashun ain't a perfect measure of a person's intelligense. Intelligense, in another respect, is the ability to acquire, undrstand, and apply knoledge. It's the capacity to adapt to new situations, solve problems, an' make decisions. Intelligense ain't tied to the amount of edumacashun a...

WHEN TEACHERS’ UNIONS BECOME MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE TEACHERS THEY REPRESENT

By Matthew Hayward To paraphrase George Orwell, “All unionized teachers are equal; it’s just that some are more equal than others.” Once upon a time, teachers’ unions were established with the noble goal of protecting the rights of educators by advocating for higher pay and working conditions. The sales pitch also included heartfelt assurances that improved compensation for teachers would attract better-qualified candidates and produce better education outcomes. Over time, the unintended consequence for teachers is that, as the union grows, it becomes less transparent and less responsive to its members. Unions in general, and teachers’ unions in particular, eventually become more concerned with their own self-preservation and the accumulation of power than the well-being of their members, let alone satisfying students or their parents. And some teachers have become more equal than others. Union leaders often use their influence to protect the interests of veteran teachers who’ve been r...

Greed Capitalism and the Intellectual Breakdown

While listening to Chris Hedges, author of Death of the Liberal Class, I could not help but agree that education in America is "vocational training for drones." As I read through the comment section, I came across a person talking about the innateness of human greed: The comments were from user: @bapyou and read as follows: ““"human beings are naturally selfish" There is no evidence that this is the case. Our capitalist economy teaches selfishness as a virtue -- the main component of the 3rd rate philosopher Ayn Rand, a woman whom every conservative nutcase on the planet worships as a goddess. In fact, there is far more evidence that the opposite is true. Human beings are not naturally selfish: capitalists wish we were, & so spend ungodly amounts of money convincing us that it is the case.” I agree that human beings are not entirely innately selfish. Once we have attained what we need to survive, the rest is dependent on our environment and intellectual and...

Defunding Government Union Influence: The Freedom Foundation's Successes

One great thing about the Freedom Foundation is that nearly everything we do is successful. Even when we appear to lose a battle, by the simple act of climbing into the ring and fighting, we’re always advancing in the overall war to defund and distract the political influence of government unions. A great example of our win-win policy is our door-to-door opt-out today program . The hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost dues to the S ervice Employees International Union ( SEIU) annually because of members opting out is a win. Still, we’re also winning because of the time and money SEIU is forced to devote to countering it. In response to our efforts, SEIU has recruited a small army of thugs to spread lies to prevent people from learning and exercising their rights. SEIU 775 is currently running ads offering to pay hired goons upwards of $50,000 a year to “encourage” individual providers to sign the membership cards, which entitles the union to skim money from workers...

School and philosophy

School and Philosophy by Matthew Edward Hayward on Saturday, June 19, 2010 What if libertarianism was taught in schools? While I oppose indoctrination and centralized government attempting to save us from ourselves, I would like to pose a hypothetical. We accept that a large portion of society is being brought up without parenting and moral guidance. We acknowledge that the void is being filled via, television, movies, and the school system. Could the solution be teaching the philosophy of freedom and personal responsibility in schools? (Has anyone ever considered that possibly our government education system might teach a bias that promotes public education and a curriculum that promotes government, etc? If there is anything I have learned in this life it is that government is good at one thing, justifying its own existence and expansion.) Added 2012-12-10 I would love to know what people think of this proposal and what the outcome might look like. "Freedom makes a huge req...

What's the Point

Albert Einstein was right when he said, "Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are even incapable of forming such opinions." Furthermore, I believe that we have reached the point of such moral degeneration that not only is there little hope of things getting better or even maintaining, but I almost look forward to the pain and suffering of all who embraced the evil with their indifference and willing ignorance. Americans are selfish, materialistic, apathetic, narrow-minded, arrogant, lazy, pathetic drones. The majority are mental slaves, automatons. Trying to inform and motivate Americans to better themselves is like trying to talk a drunk out of going to the bar; it's a waste of time. I often ask drunks, "What will it take? How bad does it have to get?" Many of them have to die; most of them are not coming out of it. Americans are the same way; it will take a tra...

When are the people going to stop the insanity?

By Matthew Edward Hayward on Saturday, November 21, 2009 This idea that America is free or that the people of this nation have political choices deeply troubles me. I, like Glenn Beck, am a recovering alcoholic. Like Glenn, I, too, have had a massive change in my thinking regarding more than just alcohol.  Everyone who suffers from this disease knows and understands that it is possible to be physically free and mentally enslaved. Knowing there is a problem, wanting change, and doing the same thing is insane; welcome to America. To say that Americans are free is to imply they have the capability or capacity to think for themselves. To me, this is as ridiculous as to say that a drug addict or alcoholic has a choice whether to use drugs or drink. Until the mental terrarium is shattered, it is virtually impossible for new concepts to be introduced or applied. Just because you tell an addict the facts about his predicament and the consequences of his actions, which I might add ...
