Washington’s Democratic Process Hijacked by Initiatives

By Matthew Hayward 11-9-2016 The initiative process was intended to provide an outlet for citizens to take direct action in the legislative process when elected officials fail to enact the will of the people. Unfortunately, it appears the process has been hijacked by wealthy special interest groups after they failed to lobby our elected officials into passing protectionist laws on their behalf. Citizens United has brought about a hyper-awareness of political expenditure in politics. Two Initiatives, I-735 , and I-1464 were on the ballot in Washington State this election, both designed to address big money in politics. There was also a presidential campaign that was largely based on “ Getting Big Money Out of Politics and Restoring Democracy,” Bernie Sanders. Ironically, I-735 was funded with over  $500,000 , largely from out-of-state donors intending to influence Washington’s elections. 4 of the top 10 donors were from out of state. This initiative has an additiona...

Union Rule Through Fear

It's no wonder so many union members are uninformed and misinformed; every day I see union propaganda that fails to get basic facts correct when messaging to their members. They mislead and fail to inform members of their rights; but worse than that, they trick members out of their rights altogether. When it comes to controlling members through fear, that is organized labors specialty. They tell members they are on the verge of losing their benefits and that "radical extremists want to roll back their gains." Fear-mongering falsehoods Several unions have been lying to their members in hopes of scaring them away from learning the truth. They are telling their members that the Freedom Foundation "has fought to take away their wage increases, retirement plan, and health benefits" FALSE . Unions are telling their members that the Freedom Foundation is trying to access their personal information and is bullying and harassing providers....

Are Republicans really that stupid?

Are Republicans that stupid? Not since 1984 has Washington State’s electoral votes gone to the Republican Party. So here is my question. Unless you believe Washington State is a swing state and that the Republicans, for the first time since Ronald Reagan’s reelection in 1984, have the chance of going red, you are all arguing and dividing the party for no reason! I didn’t vote for McCain in 2008. Do you want to know why? The only important reason I need to give you is this; there was never a chance he was going to be president; there was an even smaller chance than 0 that he would win WA State. So I voted for someone who more closely represented my conservative values, Chuck Baldwin of the Constitution Party. I get so tired of listening to people grill people to vote for the lesser of evils if you don’t back the nominee, you are supporting the other guy… That logic can only be intelligently used if the electoral votes are possibly going to the Republican Party. Unless WA Stat...

Washington’s primary system a mish-mash of unsatisfactory outcomes

Thanks to my father Allen Hayward - It’s hardly surprising that many Washington voters are shocked and angry to learn that they must identify a party choice in order to be able to cast a vote in the presidential primary. In many states, having to declare a party preference in order to vote in a primary is common practice, but not in Washington. The confusion comes from the fact that we have two very different laws in place, one dealing only with the presidential primary process and one dealing with all other state elections. The presidential primary is an actual “partisan primary” in which the Republican candidate represents the Republican Party, and the Democratic candidate represents that party. This election is run by the state of Washington but is really for the two major political parties. Initiative Measure 99, passed by the Legislature in 1989, created the presidential primary, but it is crafted to be for and by the parties. Chapter 29A.56.RCW. RCW 29A.56.050 Was...
